When I was 2 years old, that was my first sentence to my mother.
You Don't Tell Me That!
I'm sure she probably said something to me that was quite rational, like telling me to stop jumping on the furniture. What I was replying to at 2 years old may have been forgotten, but my first sentence has not. It's been a sort of motto all my life.
You see, as real estate professionals it is our job to represent the interests of our clients, be they sellers or buyers. We may do this day in an day out, year in and year out, but they only do this once every 10 years...this week I have buyers from California who have NEVER bought a house before. The home they just sold they built from the ground up. They look to us as professionals to gauge what's reasonable, and what's not. They want someone to lean on, and someone to look to for advice, reassurance, and answers to tough questions.
Last week I dealt with a ridiculous lender request regarding the requirement to install a portable microwave before a loan could be approved. You Don't Tell Me That! (And after some emails, I got that condition waived!)
Two summers ago, my father (who is my business partner and got back into the real estate business in 2005 after a 35 year hiatus) was at a summer party. There were a few other local real estate professionals there. None of these other agents knew that my father was a real estate professional in the late 1960's or that he participated in one of the largest developments of acreage in the Lake Tahoe area at Incline Village with Boise Cascade. One of the guys walked up to my Dad and asked how we were doing. We had just closed 4 escrows that month. When my Dad gushed with the good news, the other agent mocked him and said that we probably wouldn't have any more deals this year. (I guess that agent wasn't doing so well, was he? It was a good thing I wasn't there. It would have been hard not to get snippy.) All I could think was You Don't Tell My Dad That!
This business will beat you up if you let it. And things are getting tougher right now with all the lenders understaffed and overworked with new loans trying to close. It takes tenacity. We've had two escrows we've been trying to close for 2 weeks and for one reason or another, they keep delaying, day by day. Every day, when we get a new hurdle and we're told it can't work, we put on our You Don't Tell Me That hats and find a solution. And it's working...one closed Thursday and the other is due to close next week.
And here's one last You Don't Tell Me That moment...I had a deal scheduled to close yesterday where I represent the seller. All conditions were met, loan documents were signed on Tuesday and overnighted to the lender, all was a go...Until 3pm when I got a call from the Title Company. The Bank (Bank of America) wired the funds to Old Republic Title...which doesn't sound like a problem until you realize that the Title company we were using is Northern Nevada Title Company...What do you think I wanted to tell the escrow officer when she called me to say she couldn't record yesterday...Say it with me now...
OH C'MON, YOU DON'T TELL ME THAT??!?!
It seems fitting that I should write this post on my parent's 39th anniversary - today, June 6, 2009. And I love them dearly, but I'm not afraid to disagree with them about anything and live up to my motto! I hope when someone tells you 'it can't be done' next time you'll remember this post, and knuckle down and overcome the hurdle. Don't let anyone tell you no, just reply You Don't Tell Me That!
