It's that time of year again! Every year in late February, the birds of prey - and Bald Eagles in particular - make a journey to the Carson Valley to prey on rodents and afterbirth during the winter calving season. It's a great time to observe falcons, golden eagles, bald eagles, hawks, owls and other wildlife in the valley.
The Carson Valley agricultural and ranching community, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, the Audubon Society, the Great Basin Bird Observatory and the conservation community will hold Eagles and Agriculture Feb. 27 through March 1, the annual roster of tours and workshops that give photographers, birders and other nature lovers a chance to see bald eagles, golden eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and other species that come to Carson Valley each winter to feed on rodents and nutrient-rich afterbirth during the calving season.
Eagles and Agriculture, in its seventh year, attracts a couple hundred participants during the three-day event for lectures, tours and workshops. This year's lineup includes:
Birds of prey lecture and reception: Jeff Smith of Hawkwatch International will speak on "Ecology & Identification of Eagles & Other Raptors That Winter in Western Nevada." Doug Busselman, executive vice president of the Nevada Farm Bureau, will discuss Nevada agriculture, falconer Lew Souder will present a live northern goshawk and falconer Mark Moglich will display a live grey gyrfalcon. When: 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 27 Cost: $35, or $30 with Feb. 28 ranch tour.
Chartered bus tour and buffet lunch: Luxury motor coaches carry participants on a private group tour of area ranches. Learn about Carson Valley ranching and conservation and have an opportunity to view and photograph eagles, hawks, owls and other birds of prey. A buffet lunch is served immediately following the tour. When: 8 to 11:30 a.m., Feb. 28. Cost: $60.
